The Navkar Mahamantra is said to be the most meaningful, peaceful and powerful mantra in the Jain religion. This mantra is also said to be the greatest and the central mantra in Jainism. Whenever you are frustrated, depressed, feeling low or suffering from any disease; just try and close your eyes and chant this Maha mantra and you will see how powerful the Mantra is. When you recite the mantra, you literally bow down with complete respect to the five supremes in order of theie sacredness of their soul. i.e –
- the first are the Arihantas – those who have cleared their Karmas
- the second ones are Siddhas – those who have liberated their soul in each and every manner
- the third ones are Acharyas – who are the saints and the spritual leaders
- the forth ones are Upadhyayas – the guides and the teachers
- the fifth ones are sages – all the monks of the world
Now let’s learn about the literal meaning of the Jain Maha Mantra:
Namo means to bow down ; to pay homage.
Ṇamō Arihantāṇaṁ – I bow to Arihantas – who are Arihantas – They are the one who are away from the 4 karmas ; their enemies like violence, love, lust, possession etc. and are very close to the salvation.
Ṇamō Siddhāṇaṁ – I bow to the Siddhas – who are Siddhas – They are the ones who are away from their 8 karmas and they do not have affection, attachment, body, discrimination, soul, hate, name, sufferings etc and are free from their soul.
Ṇamō Ayariyāṇaṁ – I bow to the Acharyas – who are Acharyas – They are the spiritual leads in the Janism who teaches the rational conduct to everyone.
